Summary

Technology to record and transmit information was instrumental in the development of the races in the Universe. Hoppists created their own large scale internetwork to communicate over long distances, ranging from their own planet, to several galactic clusters away, using a variety of different wireless standards. K'Ursans developed their own proprietary technology and infrastructure, but soon adapted it to be better used with other races, once they formed their Federation formally.

Throughout history, both served independently and functioned vastly differently internally. Over time methods of translating and configuring both systems to interpret each other's functions came about. With this successful development, beings can contact each other and transmit data fluidly, with most technology supporting both systems regardless of manufacturer.

Hoppist Network

Purpose

Developed in early Karrots history, the Hoppist network bridges numerous devices from great distances together for the purpose of sharing data and as a public service. Its data can be read by drones, vessels, other craft and even rewritten into Hopspeak with audio programs.

There are several simple protocols in place for the network to function, most of which control intaking, reading and routing data. There are few monitoring functions, however the system has encryption methods built into all its parts, including device configuration. This ensures privacy and security for all users, including civilians. The decryption process is usually used with public keys combined with information that must be met to unlock the data. Another function of the network is to remotely control wireless devices such as drones with antennas and receivers. Drones tend to remain silent on the wireless interface of the network, to reduce the likelihood of bandwidth congestion. Karrots policy states wireless data is reserved for search and recovery pings for missing soldiers, and using drones to forward that information only if configured to.

History

The Hoppist Network was a reconstructed version of the supervision network built by the Council Courts in early Karrots history. Once Sop destroyed the Courts, it had been reworked into a new infrastructure to send communication, data and even physical parcels across Karrots. The Grand Sop Army enlisted internal roles to be in charge of the cutovers and encryption that was mandatory in all future implementations. This caused a planetwide blackout (the "Digital Horizon Starset" event) on Karrots for a partial rotation, which was eventually repaired once all devices and links were configured and installed after the project was completed.

Once evolved for spacefaring, the scale of the network grew into a galaxy-spanning network for Hoppist vehicles, terminals and infrastructure. Hoppist Network wireless technology grew significantly during both the First Great Hop Expansion and Second Great Hop Expansion. Often the technology grew in transmit power and speeds for every galaxy added to the network.

This expansion grew rapidly with the construction of the SSRW with the help of the K'Ursan Federation. Hoppist and K'Ursan terminals were installed beside technology, have extremely high throughput and low latency, often both connected to a translator so that if one's network was not on a planet or space station, it could be broadcast and forwarded along the other network. For this reason, the SSRW switches which is guarded by a member of each military.

K'U.R.V.E. (K'Ursan Recreational Virtual Environment)

Purpose

NOTE: Translated from K'Ursan, coincidentally, the acronym is the same in the English language, but the symbols are written in Universal Script.

K'U.R.V.E. is the civilian version and open standard remake of K'Ursan's private military super-network. It exists on a standardized set of hardware with numerous addressing and routing schemes to transfer data across the Universe. It is very redundant and exists in most of inhabited space. There is a special instruction language to translate data to the Hoppist Network, which is mutually reviewed by countless agents on both K'U.R.V.E. and the Hoppist Network.

Differences in Function

The K'Ursan network is far more complex in structure than the Hoppist network, and more vast, needing to communicate with multiple kinds of beings with numerous body types and potential coding and scripting structures. The Hoppist network is essentially, a single wide-area-network on Karrots with countless terminals that are connected to a DMZ that filters and reviews incoming traffic, as well as tags potentially dangerous or useless traffic.

Unexpected traffic and K'U.R.V.E data that reaches Karrots is dropped and sent a single rejection packet from the exit node of the DMZ it was received on. Unlike the intense coding and automation of K'U.R.V.E. the Hoppist Network is manually monitored has several review methods and a hard-coded negate feature for any traffic not from an authorized GSA device, such as emergency pings for soldiers in trouble. Traffic is manually routed by operators in a network operations station inside each DMZ and at most nodes in the wider security checkpoints.

The Hoppist Network, unlike K'U.R.V.E., is a single core with multiple distribution and access layers segregated at numerous points, mostly wirelessly for the sake of material reservation and reduced infrastructure costs. If wired connection is required to establish a new region, collaboration is rarely done with K'Ursan Federation service providers to accomplish either redundancy or parity, however this still requires hardware to translate any packets to a compatible version and back again once reaching Hoppist nodes wirelessly.
